Since meeting with Lead Learning Disability Nurse Consultants Kerry Anderson and Scott Taylor back in October 2025, the Rapporteurs have been busy researching and working on hospital standards. These standards would be for healthcare standards to follow when someone with a learning disability is admitted to hospital.

What would make these different from previous hospital standards, such as those from Quality Improvement Scotland is that they would be specifically for people with learning disabilities.

The intention is that they will be shaped and written by people with learning disabilities based on learning from their own experiences in hospital, good and bad.

Here is a video explaining  the timeline of what has been done since October 2025 to the end of June 2026.

At our development day at the end of June, we were again joined by Kerry and Scott. We were also joined by Isla McGlade and Cat Jamieson for a full day of workshops. Isla is a Nursing Advisor with the Learning Disabilities Policy Team at the Scottish Government. Cat is also a learning disability nurse who works for Public Services Delivery Scotland and for PAMIS.

Rapporteur Sandy Stark reflects on the session we did together.

“I really enjoyed the day. It was exhausting but really worthwhile.

I like the fact we had very open discussions and it was interesting as we were hearing from nurses from different settings.

I found the work we did together engaging.

What was important was that this work did not end there.

We took time to agree the next steps for all of us in order to move us on to the next part of the story.

Commitments were made to have regular check-ins with a small working group to keep us all up to date with the different strands of work we are each taking the lead on.
